It’s my happy privilege to wish you a Happy New Year!
I wish for you a year of promise, hope, and favor.
As I’ve reflected recently on the new year and ensuing New Year’s resolutions that such reflecting brings, I find myself less drawn to the “to do” type of resolution and more to the “to be” type of resolution. At that point, virtues like patience and generosity, come to my mind, not goals.
But if I might add one more qualifier: As I think about “to be” types of resolutions, I find that I want to add the word “more” as in “to be more patient,” “to be more generous.” But that added word lowers the bar to my current standard. For me to improve on my patience by simply being “more patient” may not lift me to the qualified status of actually being patient. So, simply put: I need to resolve to be [fill in virtue here].
I’m not sure I’m ready to commit to a published list. I’m still taking inventory on my weak spots, particularly in light of what a new year might bring my way. But I thought I’d share this little thought progression. Maybe it will help you if you are looking for a spot to place some resolve.
Blessings for 2018!
