A phrase from a Christmas carol has never been more poignant: the weary world rejoices. Our world is weary. And yet, we rejoice. I am honored to be the uncle of the very talented Maggie Reckers. The image you see here is the Christmas painting she created for 2020. I’m struck by the bundle of softness in this piece: squishy baby feet, a silky muzzle, a moist snout, a friendly tongue. It’s a contrast to the prickly, harsh year of 2020. I’m taken by how the barnyard softness in this image draws us to a focal point of innocent feet…feet that will one day walk a craggy, rocky path to the cross, feet that will take a nail for our sins. This act makes it possible for our stone slab heart to be replaced with a soft spongy heart that can absorb God’s Spirit.
That is our hope for a new and glorious morn.
May God’s Spirit bring joy to your weary world.
Merry Christmas!
